Teachers Tailgate to Show Love for their Vikings

Written by Kimberly Miller

On October 14, the first annual Tailgate with the Teachers was held in the end zone of E.S. Grider football field.  This night was also the kick-off game for the annual Battle of West Mobile between Baker and MGM.  The teachers started early planning for their tent themes and recipes by department.  The fellowship among the teachers turned to a friendly competition as the date approached.  Elaborate decorations were used to entertain everyone in attendance.  The special programs department used Halloween as a theme.  Each department member dressed in a different costume and sported labels saying things like, “Mummify the Hornets,” and “Exterminate the Hornets.”  They even set up a graveyard outside their tent.  The science department got into the action with a skeleton dressed as a Baker Hornet and a hornet in a coffin.  The science teachers dressed up as well with Dr. Morrow and Mrs. Asya Plant stepping out of the Anglo-Saxon era as Vikings.  Dr. Morrow could be spotted behind the grill cooking up some huge turkey legs Viking style.  Food was a big draw to the tents.  The electives department was popular with their gumbo home-made by the Dixon family.  Their tent was quite elegant with specially made decorations by Coach Leslie Gates.  The competition turned formal when Principal Whitney declared smack talk was heard on campus and a winner would be announced for the department with the best tailgate.  The science department was declared the winner.  Mrs. Asya Plant, ninth grade science teacher, said, “It was really fun, and most departments were involved.”  She believes it will become a yearly event and get bigger and better with each year.  In fact, the science department is already tossing around ideas for next year.
