Golf Team Chosen and Ready to Tee Off

The golf program at MGM has been active for many years, yet it sometimes is overshadowed by other viewer-friendly sports.  Last year, the boys’ golf team made a statement by claiming the trophy for the top boys’ golf team in the county.  The Mobile County Champions will be back again this year as they prepare for their first match in February.  The Vikings will host this first formal match of the season at Magnolia Grove on February 22.

MGM has a team for the guys and a team for the girls.  They practice at Magnolia Grove every day, and they travel all over Mobile County for matches at least once a week.  To cover their expenses such as uniforms and green fees, the golfers raise $300 each.  Businesses and individuals in the community make donations to the members and in return for a donation of at least $25 or more, the donor is given an MGM golf t-shirt with sponsors names on the back.

Coach Hardegree is the faculty advisor for the team.  He has always enjoyed playing golf and really enjoys seeing the students golf competitively.  When the position became available to coach the golf teams, he was fast to volunteer.  He travels from Grand Bay to Citronelle to Springhill to accompany his golfers on their matches.  He hosted a meeting for the golfers and their parents on January 10 to prepare for their season.

The golf team is geared toward MGM students who are already active golfers.  Tryouts for positions on the team are required because teams are limited in the number of students who may play in each match.  Unfortunately, the program is not prepared to teach students to golf, but it has brought interest to the sport.  Several students have mentioned taking lessons and practicing in hopes to join the team in the future.  Golfers must supply their own clubs, and have a good knowledge of the rules and etiquette of the game.
