MGM Volleyball Team Hits the Road to Victory
Written by Staff Reporter
Mary G. Montgomery’s Varsity Volleyball team hit the road at 8:30 A.M. on Thursday, October 20 travelling to Montgomery, Alabama for a match that could take the team to the Elite 8 in Alabama. The girls are scheduled to match up against Carver at 3:30 P.M. If they lose, their season is over; if they win, they move on to battle for the state championship. Matches for state begin next Wednesday and Thursday. The girls dressed in their MGM Volleyball sweatshirts left their classes on Wednesday morning for a photo-op under the banner hanging in the hall. The banner read, “Shoulda Woulda Coulda Doesn’t Cut it with the MGM Volleyball Team!” The cheerleaders made the banner to hang in the 400 hall to show our support of our varsity volleyball team. As the girls gathered for the picture, one could tell they were more than a team. They were obviously close. They knew each other’s schedules and went to classrooms to pull out their teammates so no one would miss being in the picture. The girls assembled quickly by themselves with giggles and good-natured ribbing like they’ve posed for a million pictures together before. The group probably has posed for many pictures as they have played with each other for years. The girls have become more than a team. Maybe this is what leads to their success. Their bonds and their Coach Lesley Gates have certainly been a positive influence on their success. The thirteen girls are Sara Houseknecht, Kendall Turk, Samantha Clements, Lillian DeSousa, Cassidy Greer, Skylar Lewis, Erika White, Julie Waldron, Victoria Hayes, Jenny Taylor and Lexi Stafford. These girls have played together since middle school. Sara Houseknecht said, “I love them; they are great to work with.”
One of their early season games coincided with the community pep rally held on MGM’s football field in August. After the match and fresh off a victory, the girls bounded onto the football field with confidence to be recognized. Personality is certainly not lacking with this bunch as they all were adorned with individually stylized Viking helmets to be introduced to the crowd. Not to be left out, Coach Gates sported her helmet and stood in the middle of the group posing for pictures. The team mentality and bond among the coach and girls was obviously noted.
MGM students wait in their classes knowing their volleyball team is travelling and the Viking spirit is on the road. A small gathering left their first block classes to see the team board the charter bus for the trip. The pep band and cheerleaders were there to send them off in Viking style. A group of cheerleaders travelled with them so the girls would have a bit of “home-court” feel hours away from home. Mr. Whitney, MGM’s principal, couldn’t resist the good competition the girls were sure to guarantee, so he too made the trip to Montgomery to see the match. Anxiety is evident on campus as students wait to hear the word that our 13 volleyball players are once again the absolute best volleyball team in Mobile County and beyond.
