Lawn Mower Racing
Written by Chance Hunnicutt
Lawn mower racing is the redneck style of Nascar. Not too long ago, my friends and I went to a lawnmower race and started to get the idea that we all needed to build our own lawn mowers and start racing. After the races were over, we talked to the racers. We found out what it took to build a lawn mower to race. We got loads of information and a rule book.
At first, we thought it would be easy to build a racing lawn mower, but, boy, we were wrong. It took us about five months to get one built. During the process, it was all just trial and error. We finally got most of what we needed put together and started driving it around to tweak it. After we got it race-ready, we had to become a member of the group Dixie Outlaws. It was easy to join the group. We showed up to the meeting, and they voted us in. Everyone in the group was very friendly and willing to help us out with anything we needed.
My first race was a blast. I had all my friends there to watch me and help me with different stuff on the lawn mower. I have only been racing for a few months, and I have finished in all different places in the races. I have even finished in first place a few times. There are many different classes in which to race. I had to begin in the SSS which is the Super Single Stock. After that, there are many more classes that involve bigger, faster motors which are a lot of fun to watch. As long as a racer can prove he is a good driver, those in charge of the Dixie Outlaws will allow him to move up in class.
From my time being a Dixie Outlaw, I have had a great time racing and making new friends. I suggest anyone who loves the sport of racing should definitely show up to watch a race. The Outlaws are always looking for new members. The races are held in Citronelle every other weekend. We do have a Facebook page. Look up Dixie Outlaws. There are contact numbers and information that any potential racer should need. Hope to see you there.
