For Community Service or Solace From Abuse, Penelope House May Be Your Answer
Written by Victoria Holloway
Penelope House is a non-profit organization established in 1979 by the Daughters of Penelope to help victims of domestic violence regain social and economic independence. It is the only refuge for women and children who have been abused in Mobile. This organization has helped women and children through a 24 hour crisis hotline, prevention education, and outreach counseling. They strive to help make the world a better place by helping those who have been abused. Penelope’s House gains its funds through fundraising events and the newly opened Penelope’s Closet thrift store. The clothes sold at the store are first offered to the women that are staying at the Penelope House, and then what is not wanted is sold to profit these women. Abuse affects everyone in society, not just married women. Approximately one in five high school girls has been physically or sexually abused by a dating partner. These numbers are rapidly growing, and need to be stopped. If you or anyone you know has been abused, get help. Contact Penelope House and talk to one of their many volunteers. If you would like to know more about getting help or volunteering, contact the Penelope House at 251-342-2809.
Penelope also offers opportunities for volunteers. If you are a student seeking community service points, Penelope House could be a rewarding experience for you.
It is important for high school students to realize that abuse comes in many forms. Physical abuse is not the only form of abuse. In fact, mental abuse is a common problem among high school students. If your boyfriend or girlfriend treats you in any way that makes you feel bad about yourself, that is a form of abuse. If you have trouble removing yourself from a negative relationship, seek help.
